That said, we didn't get moving until 10.25am by the time we had showered, breakfasted and completed all our pre-journey tasks.
It's a long drive today but all on the A26, a road we've travelled many times. There will be tolls but it's a superb road and it won't be busy on a Sunday so, at a steady 60mph, we should be there in around 5 hours.
In the event, it took us 6 hours and was 239 miles. Tolls came out at £14.14 to Reims then £29.26 to Calais.
We arrived then at Bien Assise at 4.30pm, having been delayed by 30 minutes getting caught up in one France's popular cycle races. Marshalls held up the traffic whilst these crazy Frenchmen (probably) hurtled past at ridiculous speeds
As we entered the regions of Picardie then Nord Pas De Calais we began to see, in the fields, men in orange high vis jackets, carrying guns. Often there were anything up to 10 of them, all together. We guessed they were hunting but couldn't decide what.
Googling it on our return I found the hunting season begins in September and varies from region to region and also different game on different days. Sunday apparently is the worse day for accidental deaths with more and more members of the public taking to the countryside on a weekend.
Our final night in France. Warm enough to sit out for a while and resigned to the fact we're at the end of the holiday and thinking about home now.
